The beloved Australian soap opera Neighbours is facing cancellation once again, just two years after its revival by Amazon. The show will conclude in December 2025, marking the end of its second run.
Production company Fremantle confirmed that filming will wrap up in July, with new episodes continuing to air on Amazon Prime Video globally and Australia's Channel Ten until late 2025. The announcement comes as Amazon withdraws its support for the series.
The iconic show, which helped launch the careers of stars like Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, and Guy Pearce, initially ended its 37-year run in 2022 when UK broadcaster Channel 5 pulled funding. Amazon stepped in to revive the series through its Freevee streaming service after an outpouring of fan support.
According to industry insiders speaking to The Sun UK, the revival didn't attract the viewership numbers Amazon had hoped for. The streaming giant produced over 400 episodes during its two-year involvement with the series.
The show's future now hangs in the balance, as it requires another international broadcaster or streaming deal to continue. Channel Ten has previously stated it cannot fund production independently.
Executive Producer Jason Herbison expressed pride in the show's recent achievements, including its first Daytime Emmy nomination and strong performance in the UK market. He remained optimistic about future possibilities, noting there are "more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell."
The cancellation news arrives just as Neighbours approaches its 40th anniversary milestone next month, marking four decades since its debut on Australian television in 1985.
Channel Ten thanked the cast, crew, and loyal viewers for their dedication to the series, acknowledging the show's lasting impact on Australian television and its role as a training ground for industry professionals.
