The creative powerhouse behind the hit sci-fi series "The Expanse" is reuniting with Amazon MGM Studios for an ambitious new project. The studio has greenlit the development of "The Captive's War," based on James S.A. Corey's latest book series, with Naren Shankar returning as showrunner.
The new series, adapted from Corey's recent New York Times bestseller "The Mercy of Gods," takes place in a far-future setting of galactic empires and alien civilizations. Drawing inspiration from the biblical Book of Daniel, the story follows imprisoned individuals who emerge from disaster to systematically dismantle their oppressors' society from within.
The project comes through Expanding Universe, a newly established multi-platform media company founded by "The Expanse" veterans Shankar, director Breck Eisner, and authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who together write as James S.A. Corey).
Shankar will lead the series as writer and showrunner, with Abraham and Franck joining the writing team. Eisner is set to direct, maintaining the core creative team that brought "The Expanse" to life across its six-season run.
"On 'The Expanse' we built a deep, immersive universe filled with great characters and intense, emotional stories," Shankar said, emphasizing their ability to create compelling content efficiently.
The adaptation marks the first major project from Expanding Universe, which aims to develop science fiction content across multiple platforms, including television, gaming, and publishing. The company's approach mirrors the successful evolution of "The Expanse," which began as a planned video game before expanding into novels and television.
With "The Captive's War," the team promises to bring their expertise in world-building and character-driven storytelling to a new universe, potentially launching another landmark science fiction series for Prime Video.
