In an exclusive interview, acclaimed French director Jacques Audiard addresses the controversy surrounding "Emilia Pérez" star Karla Sofía Gascón and defends his film's artistic vision amid mounting criticism.

The conversation comes at a time when Gascón's controversial social media posts have overshadowed the film's 13 Oscar nominations. Audiard expresses deep disappointment in Gascón's behavior and her failure to take accountability for her actions.

"What Karla Sofía said is inexcusable," states Audiard. "She is in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in, and I really don't understand why she's continuing. Why is she harming herself? Why?"

The 72-year-old director reveals he has not spoken to Gascón and has no plans to do so. Instead, he emphasizes his commitment to supporting other cast members, particularly Zoe Saldaña, and the crew who worked tirelessly on the film.

Addressing criticism about shooting the film in France rather than Mexico, Audiard explains it was primarily a financial decision. The French funding benefits were twelve times greater than Mexican rebates, accounting for half of the film's $24 million budget.

The director also clarifies his artistic intentions, defending the film's operatic style against claims of unrealistic portrayals. "I've never claimed that I wanted to make a realistic work. If I wanted to make a work that was particularly documented, then I would do a documentary, but then there would be no singing and dancing."

Despite the current controversy, Audiard maintains his philosophical approach to filmmaking: "Cinema fundamentally does not serve to answer questions. Its function is to ask questions."

The French auteur plans to continue participating in awards season events, though he acknowledges a certain sadness has overtaken what should have been a celebratory period for the film and its achievements.
