Paramount+ With Showtime has officially greenlit a second season of "Dexter: Original Sin," following the successful run of its 10-episode first season which concluded in February. The prequel series, narrated by Michael C. Hall, explores the origin story of America's favorite serial killer.
Set in 1991 Miami, the series stars Patrick Gibson as young Dexter Morgan, showcasing his evolution into a methodical killer under the guidance of his adoptive father Harry, played by Christian Slater. The show follows teenage Dexter as he navigates his growing dark urges while working as an intern at the Miami Metro Police Department.
The first season proved to be a ratings success, with the finale drawing 2.68 million global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime platforms - a 27% increase from its December premiere. The show has earned recognition as Showtime's most-streamed series in the past decade.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips will return to helm the second season, with the writers' room scheduled to begin work shortly. Production dates are yet to be announced.
The series features a strong ensemble cast including Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, with special appearances by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey.
The renewal comes as the "Dexter" universe continues to expand, with "Dexter: Resurrection" - featuring Michael C. Hall - set to premiere this summer. The franchise may also see another addition with discussions ongoing about a potential Trinity Killer limited series featuring John Lithgow.
"Dexter: Original Sin" is produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios, with Phillips leading the executive production team alongside Scott Reynolds, Michael C. Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns.
