Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi had a surprising moment of forgetfulness about his guest appearance on the iconic animated series The Simpsons, despite it being a childhood dream come true.

The filmmaker, who voiced himself in the 2023 episode "Murder, She Boat," only remembered his cameo after someone recently sent him a screenshot from the show. "What's that?" Waititi asked when shown the image, before exclaiming, "Oh damn! I was on The Simpsons, that's right."

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi shared his lifelong connection to the series. "I've loved The Simpsons ever since I was a kid," he said, noting how appearing on the show fulfilled a longtime ambition.

This isn't the first time the director has forgotten about his acting roles. When asked about his appearance in the 2019 comedy series "Year of the Rabbit," Waititi struggled to recall details beyond wearing "a big, funny mustache" and holding "a top hat and an accordion."

Despite his memory lapses, Waititi maintains his enthusiasm for working with talented collaborators. Speaking about "Year of the Rabbit" star Matt Berry, he praised him as "an icon" and "one of the funniest people I've ever met."

The director's candid admission about forgetting his Simpsons appearance adds a humorous footnote to the long-running animated show's celebrity guest star history.
