Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran has publicly come out as queer in a recent Vanity Fair interview while discussing her role in an upcoming LGBTQ+ romantic comedy.
"I haven't said this publicly yet, but I'm a queer person," the 35-year-old actress revealed in the November 22 interview. Tran opened up while promoting her latest project - a modern remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film "The Wedding Banquet," directed by Andrew Ahn.
In the new adaptation, Tran plays Angela, a woman pursuing IVF treatment with her girlfriend Lee (played by Lily Gladstone). The film follows their story alongside their friends Chris (Bowen Yang) and Min (Han Gi-chan), who live in their guest house.
The actress shared that the role felt deeply personal, stating "I got to play a person that I felt like I knew. I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie." She described the experience of working on the film as transformative, noting it was her first time being in a queer space where she felt completely accepted.
Tran also revealed that her own coming out experience with her mother mirrors scenes in the film between her character and Joan Chen, who plays Angela's mother. While she kept the specific details private, the emotional weight of sharing her story publicly was evident. "I haven't done this in a while. I'm getting freaking emotional over here," she told Vanity Fair.
This isn't Tran's first show of support for LGBTQ+ representation. She previously advocated for queer storytelling in animation, suggesting her character in Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" could be interpreted as queer.
The new adaptation of "The Wedding Banquet" features an impressive ensemble cast, including Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn and Joan Chen. Director Ahn has reimagined the original story, moving it to Seattle while maintaining its core themes of family, acceptance, and identity.
