Ralph Macchio has revealed discussions are underway about a potential sequel to the beloved 1992 comedy "My Cousin Vinny," with hopes of bringing back original star Joe Pesci.
Speaking at PaleyFest, Macchio, who played Bill Gambini in the original film, shared that he has been exploring possibilities with writers to revive the classic courtroom comedy. "I've had conversations with other writers about that," Macchio told PEOPLE, describing the original as "a beloved piece."
The actor acknowledged that developing a worthy follow-up requires finding "the smart angle in." Addressing potential concerns about 82-year-old Pesci's involvement, Macchio suggested a creative workaround, saying the veteran actor "could FaceTime it in" if full on-set filming proves challenging.
The original "My Cousin Vinny" featured Macchio as a young man wrongly accused of murder who enlists help from his inexperienced lawyer cousin Vinny (Pesci). The film earned Marisa Tomei an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mona Lisa Vito.
Tomei has previously expressed enthusiasm for revisiting her character. In 2017, she told CinemaBlend, "I always wanted to do a My Cousin Vinny sequel... I think Joe and I would still have so much fun."
With Macchio's hit series "Cobra Kai" concluding its run on Netflix, the timing could be right for this potential revival. The actor's success with "Cobra Kai" demonstrates his ability to breathe new life into classic properties while maintaining their original charm.
As discussions continue, fans of the original comedy eagerly await news about whether this courtroom reunion will materialize, bringing together the memorable characters that made the first film a standout success.
