In an exciting development for fans of workplace comedy, Ricky Gervais' groundbreaking mockumentary series "The Office" is set to receive a Mexican remake. The new adaptation, titled "La Oficina," will be produced by Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Gary "Gaz" Alazraki's Máquina Vega.
The Mexican version of "The Office" will be helmed by Alazraki, known for his successful comedy projects "Nosotros los Nobles" and "Club de Cuervos." He will serve as both director and executive producer. Marcos Bucay, creator of "Cómo Sobrevivir Soltero," has been tapped as the showrunner for this highly anticipated adaptation.
"La Oficina" will be set in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes, focusing on a family-owned business called Jabones Olimpo (Olimpo Soaps). The story will revolve around the regional manager, Jerónimo Ponce III, and his staff as they navigate the challenges of working under an incompetent boss in a family-run company.
This marks another milestone for "The Office" franchise, which has already seen successful adaptations in countries such as the United States, France, Chile, and Poland. The new Mexican version promises to bring a unique flavor to the beloved format, tapping into the rich and surreal subculture of Mexican office workers.
Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that the combination of the successful comedy format with the talents of Bucay and Alazraki is sure to create something truly special that will exceed expectations.
Both Alazraki and Bucay have shared their excitement about working on this adaptation. Alazraki revealed that he has wanted to adapt "The Office" since 2003, considering it the bravest comedy he's ever seen. Bucay, a long-time fan of the original series, sees this project as a celebration of Mexican office culture and promises a pleasant surprise for viewers.
"La Oficina" will be available exclusively on Prime Video in Latin America, Brazil, and Spain, as part of the overall deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Máquina Vega. With its unique Mexican twist on the familiar format, this adaptation is poised to bring fresh laughter to fans of workplace comedy around the world.
