Comedian Margaret Cho recently shared her transformative journey to sobriety, revealing how eight and a half years of being substance-free has completely changed her perspective on life and happiness.
Speaking exclusively at the Out100 Event in Hollywood, the 56-year-old comedian opened up about her experience, describing her sober life as "another life entirely." Despite the length of time, Cho notes it somehow feels both long and short simultaneously.
The path to her recovery began when those closest to her helped her recognize her struggles with addiction. "I just didn't realize what a problem it was," Cho admitted, acknowledging that many addicts share this lack of awareness about their condition.
Contrary to common fears about sobriety being the end of fun, Cho discovered quite the opposite. "I thought that the party would be over, but actually when you put all that stuff down, the party begins," she shared, emphasizing how she's been enjoying life more authentically since becoming sober.
The transformation has touched every aspect of her life, particularly her mental well-being. Cho revealed that she previously misidentified herself as a "troubled girl" and someone who struggled with depression. However, sobriety helped her discover her naturally joyful disposition.
Looking ahead to the new year, Cho encourages others to experiment with sobriety. She suggests people often use substances as a "security blanket" to manage social anxieties, and challenges them to explore life without these crutches.
"Try to go without drinking and using drugs. Just see what it feels like to let that go," she advises, inviting others to discover where a clear-minded journey might lead them.
The comedian remains deeply grateful for her sobriety, expressing how it has brought her lasting peace and contentment in ways she never expected.
