Music legend Sir Elton John has disclosed that he has lost his eyesight following a severe eye infection earlier this year. The 77-year-old singer made this revelation during a charity gala performance of "The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical" in London on Sunday night.
"I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because I've lost my eyesight," John told the audience at the Dominion Theatre. While he couldn't see the performance, he expressed joy at being able to hear the musical, for which he composed the score.
The "Rocket Man" singer explained that he contracted the infection in July while in the south of France, which resulted in complete vision loss in his right eye. His left eye's vision is also compromised, making it challenging for him to read or watch anything.
Speaking to "Good Morning America" in November, John shared the impact of his condition on his professional life. "I'm kind of stuck at the moment. Going into the studio and recording, I don't know, because I can't see a lyric for starters," he said.
Despite these challenges, John maintains an optimistic outlook. He indicated there is hope for improvement, though recovery has been a slow process. The musician expressed gratitude for the medical care he's received and the support surrounding him during this difficult time.
The charity gala, benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation, drew notable attendees including fashion designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The musical, based on the 2006 film, stars Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly.
While managing his vision problems, John continues his involvement in various projects, including the upcoming documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late," set to premiere on Disney+ December 13.
