Veteran soap opera actress Leslie Charleson, who portrayed Dr. Monica Quartermaine on "General Hospital" for nearly five decades, has passed away at age 79. Her death was announced Sunday by the show's executive producer Frank Valentini.
Charleson began her iconic role as Monica Quartermaine in 1977, becoming the longest-serving cast member on the beloved daytime drama. Over her 47-year run, she earned four Daytime Emmy nominations and brought depth to numerous groundbreaking storylines, including a powerful breast cancer narrative in the 1990s.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1945, Charleson studied theater at Bennett College in New York before launching her television career in the 1960s. She appeared in several soap operas including "A Flame in the Wind" and "As the World Turns" before landing her career-defining role on "General Hospital."
As Monica Quartermaine, Charleson became the matriarch of one of daytime television's most prominent families. Her character's tempestuous romance with Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) captivated audiences for decades with their legendary love-hate relationship.
In recent years, health issues had limited Charleson's appearances on the show. Her final appearance was in December 2023.
"Just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew," Valentini shared in his announcement. "I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set."
Beyond her soap opera work, Charleson appeared in numerous primetime shows including "The Rockford Files," "Happy Days," and "Friends." She was also an accomplished equestrian and devoted animal lover.
The actress was previously married to G. William Demms from 1988 to 1991.
