Veteran actor and comedian Martin Short has achieved a remarkable career milestone, winning his first Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award at age 74 for his role in the Hulu comedy series "Only Murders in the Building."
Short received the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Oliver Putnam, a former Broadway director turned true-crime podcast host. The win came after two previous nominations in the same category for the same role in 2022 and 2023.
The actor was unable to attend the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 23, as he recently contracted COVID-19 during the "Saturday Night Live" 50th anniversary special, according to his co-star Steve Martin. Presenters Joey King and Jack Quaid accepted the award on Short's behalf.
In claiming the victory, Short prevailed over a competitive field that included Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear"), Adam Brody ("Nobody Wants This"), Ted Danson ("A Man on the Inside"), and Harrison Ford ("Shrinking").
The recognition adds to Short's growing collection of accolades for his role as Oliver Putnam, which has already earned him three consecutive Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations. His performance in "Only Murders in the Building" continues alongside co-stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, with the show already renewed for a fifth season.
Throughout his extensive career, Short has delighted audiences with memorable performances in productions such as "SCTV," "Father of the Bride," "Three Amigos," and "Damages." This SAG Award victory marks a notable achievement in his distinguished entertainment career spanning several decades.
