Netflix's animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" has officially ended its run after one season. Bryan Lee O'Malley, the original graphic novel creator and series co-developer, announced the news exactly one year after the show's debut.
The anime adaptation featured the return of the entire cast from Edgar Wright's live-action film "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, and Chris Evans. The eight-episode season premiered on Netflix in November 2022.
While sharing the news on social media platform X, O'Malley described the project as a "one-of-a-kind miracle" and expressed gratitude for working with the talented cast and staff worldwide. He noted that the team had always envisioned the show as a single-season story, having "put all their ideas in there."
The series' performance metrics on Netflix showed modest viewership numbers. It appeared for one week on the TV English charts, accumulating 7.4 million viewing hours. In Netflix's Engagement Reports, the show ranked 287th during its release period with 22.5 million hours watched.
Despite some fans hoping for continuation, O'Malley explained that producing additional episodes would have been "nearly impossible" given the numerous favors called in to create the first season. In previous interviews, he had mentioned that it would take "about 50 different miracles simultaneously" for another season to happen.
The announcement was met with appreciation from fans who shared how the series had impacted them through art inspiration and emotional connection. The show will remain on Netflix as a complete, self-contained story.
