British actor-comedian Nick Frost is reportedly close to securing the role of Rubeus Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation, joining an already impressive cast lineup.
The beloved character of Hagrid, previously portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane in all eight Harry Potter films, serves as Hogwarts' warmhearted gamekeeper and eventual Care of Magical Creatures professor.
Speculation about Frost's casting gained momentum after his cryptic Instagram post on March 20, stating "It's happening, it's actually happening." Observant fans also noticed Frost recently began following confirmed cast members John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu on social media.
If finalized, Frost would join an ensemble that includes Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.
HBO has maintained discretion regarding casting rumors, releasing a statement: "We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals."
The series, planned to span a decade, comes from writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod. HBO executives have promised a faithful adaptation that will explore each of J.K. Rowling's iconic books in detail.
Frost is best known for his collaborations with Simon Pegg in films like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." Audiences can next see him in the upcoming live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" remake, scheduled for release in June.
