"The Last of Us" star Bella Ramsey recently disclosed their autism diagnosis, which came to light during the filming of the hit HBO series' first season. The Emmy-nominated actor shared their story in a candid interview with British Vogue.
The diagnosis emerged after an observant crew member, who has an autistic daughter, recognized familiar behavioral patterns in Ramsey. This prompted the actor to pursue a formal psychiatric assessment, ultimately leading to their autism diagnosis.
Ramsey, who had previously discussed neurodivergence without specifying details, described the diagnosis as "freeing" and enlightening. "My experience of moving through the world is as an autistic person. There's no reason for people not to know," they told British Vogue.
The actor reflected on past experiences, including feeling out of place at school and dealing with sensory sensitivities. During filming in Canada, Ramsey experienced discomfort with the heavy waterproof gear required for shooting, noting it felt like "too much stuff on my body."
Interestingly, Ramsey believes their autism has enhanced their acting abilities. "I've always been watching and learning from people. Having to learn more manually how to socialize and interact with the people around me has helped me with acting," they explained. The structured environment of film sets also provides welcome routine, with clear instructions about wardrobe, positioning, and schedules.
The diagnosis has helped Ramsey better understand themselves and approach daily challenges with more self-compassion. They noted that sharing their diagnosis allows them to "unmask immediately" and be their authentic self without hiding.
The actor's revelation adds to growing discussions about neurodiversity in the entertainment industry, highlighting how different perspectives and experiences can contribute to artistic expression.
