Netflix has made a groundbreaking move by securing exclusive U.S. streaming rights for the FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments in 2027 and 2031, becoming the first streaming platform to broadcast this prestigious event.
The 2027 tournament will take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, featuring 32 teams competing across 12 cities. The host nation and details for the 2031 edition are yet to be announced.
Beyond match coverage, Netflix plans to deliver comprehensive tournament content including studio shows, expert commentary, and original documentaries highlighting rising stars and the growing popularity of women's football.
"This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women's World Cup and the global women's game," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, emphasizing the historic nature of the partnership.
The streaming giant has already demonstrated success in sports programming. Its broadcast of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson became the most-streamed sporting event ever with 108 million viewers, while the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano match drew 74 million global viewers, setting a record for women's sports viewership in the U.S.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria noted the platform's commitment extends beyond just streaming matches: "It's about celebrating the players, the culture, and the passion driving the global rise of women's sports."
The deal includes broadcasts in multiple languages, with both English and Spanish coverage available to U.S. viewers. This partnership adds to Netflix's expanding live sports portfolio, which includes NFL Christmas Day games and WWE Raw programming.
This move represents a major shift in sports broadcasting, as major tournaments traditionally aired on conventional television networks now find new homes on streaming platforms, reflecting evolving viewer preferences and the changing media landscape.
