Netflix maintained its position as the leading network for show cancellations in 2024, ending 16 series and announcing final seasons for six additional shows. This brings the streaming giant's total show endings to 22 for the year, far surpassing other networks and streaming platforms.
Nine of Netflix's canceled shows were cut after just their first season, including "Bad Dinosaurs," "The Brothers Sun," "Buying London," "Dead Boy Detectives," "Everything Now," "Kaos," "Obliterated," "Ratched," and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."
Max came in second place with nine series cancellations, while Apple TV+, CBS, and Prime Video each ended six shows during the year.
Several networks demonstrated more restraint, with nine platforms canceling only one show each in 2024. These included AMC, BBC America, CNN, HBO, MGM+, National Geographic Channel, Showtime, TruTV, and USA Network.
The television industry as a whole saw 97 shows come to an end in 2024. Of these, 78 were canceled without proper conclusions, while 21 received final season orders allowing them to wrap up their storylines.
While Netflix continues to produce successful content, the high number of cancellations reflects the platform's strategy of testing new shows and quickly ending those that don't meet viewership expectations. This approach, though potentially frustrating for viewers, allows Netflix to continuously refresh its content lineup with new programming.
