African streaming platform Showmax has announced a new Zulu-language adaptation of the popular NBC workplace comedy 'Superstore.' The remake will be produced locally by Barkers Media, known for shows like 'Killer Front Page' and 'Shebeen Queens,' in partnership with Universal International Studios.
The original American series, which ran for six seasons on NBC, followed the daily lives and adventures of employees at a fictional big-box store called Cloud 9. Created by Justin Spitzer, the show featured America Ferrera and Ben Feldman leading an ensemble cast.
Production on the African adaptation is scheduled to begin in 2024. This marks Showmax's second recent comedy format acquisition, following their order of a local remake of 'The Office.'
"We're on Cloud 9," said Nicola van Niekerk, Executive Head of Programming at MultiChoice, Showmax's parent company. "I laughed my way through every episode of Superstore and can't wait to see how the funny and loveable characters are reimagined in our complex country."
Hannah Mabruk, VP of Format Sales for NBCUniversal Formats, expressed enthusiasm about the adaptation, noting the show's universal themes of community and workplace friendship that resonate with audiences worldwide.
The announcement comes as part of a broader partnership between Showmax and NBCUniversal, with the latter's Peacock platform now powering the African streaming service following a February 2024 relaunch. NBCUniversal holds a 30% stake in Showmax, whose parent company MultiChoice is currently involved in acquisition talks with Canal+ valued at $2.9 billion.
The new adaptation will join Seasons 1-6 of the original American series, which are already available on Showmax's platform.
