Reese Witherspoon recently revealed that Netflix's hit series "Wednesday," starring Jenna Ortega, sparked the idea for a new "Legally Blonde" prequel TV show. During her appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," the 48-year-old actress shared how watching "Wednesday" led to the creation of "Elle," an upcoming Amazon series focusing on Elle Woods' high school years.
"I saw that Wednesday Addams show, and I was like, 'Oh!'" Witherspoon told Fallon. "She was in high school. I loved it, I watched every episode, I thought it was amazing. And I was like, 'We should do Elle Woods in high school!'"
The new series, titled "Elle," will explore the beloved character's teenage years, showcasing her unique personality and problem-solving skills before her Harvard Law School journey. Production is scheduled to begin in March, with casting currently underway to find a young actress to portray the teenage version of Elle Woods.
In September, Witherspoon launched a nationwide casting call through Instagram, inviting young actresses to audition for the role of high school Elle Woods. "The search for the high school version of Elle Woods is officially ON!" she announced enthusiastically.
While fans can look forward to this new chapter in the "Legally Blonde" universe, the status of "Legally Blonde 3," which was set to be written by Mindy Kaling, remains uncertain. The last update came from actor Luke Wilson in June, who mentioned he hadn't received any news about the film's progress.
Witherspoon, who currently stars alongside Will Ferrell in "You're Cordially Invited," expressed her excitement about the casting process, noting the challenge of selecting from many talented young actresses. The series promises to bring Elle Woods' signature style and charm to a new generation of viewers.
