Actor Oliver Hudson recently opened up about a touching moment from his childhood when Kurt Russell, his mother Goldie Hawn's longtime partner, offered to legally adopt him and his sister Kate.
During a November episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast, Hudson shared the personal story while discussing adoptive families with guests Tish Cyrus-Purcell and Brandi Cyrus.
Hudson, now 48, explained that Russell entered his life when he was around five or six years old, following the departure of his biological father Bill Hudson. Though Russell never officially became their legal father, he played an instrumental role in raising both Oliver and Kate.
"Kurt came into my life when I was six, five or six and essentially he raised me. I'm the man I am today because of him," Hudson revealed on the podcast. He recalled the moment Russell approached them about adoption, but both children declined the offer.
"We just said, 'Well, we don't need it. The love is right there,'" Hudson explained, noting they were likely too young to fully grasp the implications of adoption at the time.
While Hudson maintains a strong father-son bond with Russell, whom he affectionately calls "Pa," he acknowledged the complexity of growing up without his biological father present. "When you don't have your biological [parent] around, it's hard to replace that, no matter what," he reflected.
Russell and Hawn have been together since 1983, choosing to build their family without formal adoption papers or marriage certificates. Their enduring relationship has demonstrated that legal documentation isn't always necessary to create strong family bonds.
