The famous house from the beloved holiday movie "Home Alone" has sold above its listing price of $5.5 million in Winnetka, Illinois, after spending less than a year on the market.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence, which originally listed for $5.25 million in May, quickly went under contract. Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor of Coldwell Banker Realty, who handled the sale, expressed their delight at how the property resonated with people due to its place in film history and holiday memories.
Previous owners Tim and Trisha Johnson, who purchased the home in 2012 for $1.585 million, undertook extensive renovations in 2018 while maintaining the property's iconic charm. The updates included adding a family room with elevated ceilings, French doors, a chef's kitchen, and a screened porch. The memorable brick exterior from the film remains unchanged.
An interesting historical note comes from former resident Laura Abendshien, who lived in the house during the movie's filming. She revealed that her family had to crawl below window level to avoid appearing on camera during the four to five months of production.
Abendshien also shared that star Macaulay Culkin spent considerable time at the house between scenes, using her bedroom as a study space with his tutor. His brother Keiran would often hang out there as well.
The house became a tourist attraction after the film's release in 1990, with endless lines of cars and visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous movie location. Abendshien recalled how her family came to embrace the home's special place in holiday movie history.
The sale marks a new chapter for this piece of cinematic history, which has maintained its appeal more than three decades after the film's release.
