HBO has officially confirmed that a Game of Thrones movie is in development, marking the fantasy franchise's first planned venture onto the big screen.
The announcement came during HBO's 2025 preview event, where Bloys addressed reporters about the project's current status. While no director, writer, or cast members are currently attached to the film, Warner Bros. has been quietly developing at least one movie set in George R.R. Martin's rich fantasy world.
"When we develop projects at HBO, it's about exploring possibilities," Bloys explained. "We'll work on developing an idea and evaluate if it's worthy of being a theatrical spectacle. I think it could be an exciting opportunity."
The move to the big screen isn't entirely unexpected. Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO's parent company, has made it clear they intend to expand their major franchises. Previously, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had considered concluding their television series with three feature films before ultimately deciding on a six-episode final season in 2019.
George R.R. Martin, the creator of the book series, is involved in the movie's development process. He had previously discussed the possibility of a film adaptation as far back as 2014, noting that the scope of his stories and the growing size of the dragons might benefit from a larger budget and theatrical presentation.
While the project's confirmation has generated excitement among fans, Bloys emphasized its preliminary status. "It's very early in the process," he stated, indicating that the project will undergo careful development before any major decisions are made.
This announcement comes as HBO continues to expand the Game of Thrones universe, with House of the Dragon's third season in production and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms scheduled for release in 2025. However, some planned projects, including a previously announced Jon Snow spinoff series, have been shelved as the network focuses on stories that best serve the franchise.
