Beloved Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke opens up about mortality and life in a touching new Coldplay music video, sharing candid thoughts about death as he approaches his 99th birthday.
The Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner appears in the seven-minute video for Coldplay's "All My Love," filmed at his Malibu beachfront home. With remarkable peace of mind, Van Dyke addresses his mortality: "I'm acutely aware that I could go any day now, but I don't know why it doesn't concern me. I'm not afraid of it. I have the feeling that I'm gonna be alright."
The video, co-directed by Spike Jonze and Mary Wigmore, captures intimate moments of Van Dyke's life and illustrious career. The beloved Mary Poppins star recreates his famous penguin dance and The Twizzle from The Dick Van Dyke Show, while family photos chronicle his decades in entertainment.
When asked about love by the directors, Van Dyke thoughtfully responds: "They've been asking that question for centuries. I don't know. It's certainly the feeling of caring about the welfare and the life of the other person, as much as you care for yourself."
The heartwarming footage shows Van Dyke dancing barefoot with his wife Arlene Silver and spending time with his children and grandchildren. In one touching moment, he shares a dream about his daughter Stacy: "I've had dreams where I'm depressed or lonely or hurt, and she comes to comfort me."
Reflecting on his career, Van Dyke's recent accolades include becoming the oldest Daytime Emmy winner in history at age 98. "I got to do what I love... play and act silly. I'm one of those lucky people who got to do for a living what I would have done anyway."
A shorter version of the video will debut on December 13th to celebrate Van Dyke's 99th birthday, featuring an impromptu song by Coldplay's Chris Martin that left the actor beaming with joy.
