Director Matt Reeves, the creative force behind 2022's "The Batman," is already in talks with HBO about developing additional villain-focused spinoff series set in his dark and gritty Gotham City universe. This news comes as excitement builds for the upcoming HBO Max series "The Penguin," starring Colin Farrell reprising his role from the film.

In a recent interview, Reeves revealed that he's actively exploring ideas for new shows that would delve deeper into the rogues' gallery of Batman's adversaries. While he didn't specify which villains might be in the spotlight, fans are speculating about potential series featuring iconic characters like the Riddler, Catwoman, or even the Joker.

Reeves expressed his enthusiasm for expanding the world he created in "The Batman," saying, "There's so much rich storytelling potential in these characters. We're just scratching the surface with 'The Penguin,' and I'm thrilled about the possibility of exploring other villains in depth."

The director also addressed his decision not to helm "The Penguin" series himself. Reeves explained that while he's deeply involved in the show's development as an executive producer, he felt it was important to bring in a fresh perspective for the spinoff.

"I wanted to give another talented director the opportunity to put their stamp on this world," Reeves stated. "It's exciting to see how other creatives interpret and build upon the foundation we've laid."

Reeves emphasized that his primary focus remains on developing the sequel to "The Batman," which is currently in the scripting phase. However, he sees these spinoff series as a way to keep audiences engaged with the universe between film installments.

As for "The Penguin," the series is set to begin production soon, with Lauren LeFranc serving as showrunner. The show will explore Oswald Cobblepot's rise to power in Gotham's criminal underworld following the events of "The Batman."

With Reeves' continued involvement and the potential for more villain-centric spinoffs, it's clear that HBO and Warner Bros. are committed to building a expansive and interconnected Batman universe across both film and television.
