In an awkward moment during Tuesday's episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show," Martha Stewart physically pushed away host Drew Barrymore after an uncomfortably close interaction between the two celebrities.
Stewart, 83, appeared on the show to promote her 100th cookbook when Barrymore, 49, began displaying her characteristic touchy-feely interview style. The incident occurred after Barrymore asked Stewart what makes her feel "soft and gooey," while moving closely beside her on the show's couch.
After Stewart responded with "treatment," Barrymore began stroking the cookbook author's arm and back, prompting Stewart to firmly push her away while stating, "You're the wrong gender." The interaction drew laughs from the studio audience.
This isn't the first time Barrymore's physical approach to interviewing has raised eyebrows. In December, viewers called her "cringy" after she held Oprah Winfrey's hand and caressed her arm during an interview. While Winfrey later defended Barrymore's actions, calling them "comforting," other guests have appeared visibly uncomfortable with the host's proximity.
Barrymore has acknowledged the criticism of her hands-on interviewing style. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in August, she admitted that maintaining physical distance is "not my strong point" and apologized to those who don't appreciate her approach. She attributed her tactile nature partly to her experience during the pandemic, saying, "I was alone in a studio by myself! I like to be around people!"
The host maintains that her physical expressions of affection stem from her desire to create a joyful atmosphere on her show. However, the Stewart incident highlights the ongoing debate about personal boundaries in television interviews.
