Apple TV+ has announced the release date for its highly anticipated historical drama series "Chief of War," starring Jason Momoa. The nine-episode series will debut on August 1st with two episodes, followed by weekly releases through September 19th.

Based on true events from the late 18th century, the series chronicles the story of warrior Ka'iana, played by Momoa, and his mission to unite the Hawaiian islands before Western colonization. The show features a talented ensemble cast including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, and several others.

The project marks a personal milestone for Momoa, who co-created the series with Thomas Pa'a Sibbett. Both creators share native Hawaiian ancestry, bringing authenticity to the storytelling. This also represents Momoa's first television writing credit, though he previously co-wrote films including "Road to Paloma" and "The Last Manhunt."

"Chief of War" is Momoa's second collaboration with Apple TV+, following his role in the post-apocalyptic series "See," which ran for three seasons. The actor will not only star but also direct the season finale, working alongside showrunner Doug Jung.

The series brings together an experienced production team, with Justin Chon directing the first two episodes. Executive producers include industry veterans Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten, with Fifth Season serving as the studio.

The historical epic promises to deliver a compelling narrative of Hawaiian history, combining Momoa's creative vision with his cultural heritage in what appears to be his most personal project to date.
