Jeff Mariotte shares an Author’s Perspective on Writing Tie-In Books and Comics

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

by Kate Blake- Admin Multipleverses.com

Last weekend at the Phoenix Comic Con I had the privilege of sitting in on an intimate discussion with author Jeff Mariotte. Jeff is well known for his work as a tie-in author and comic book author. He has written books for Buffy, Angel, Supernatural, Las Vegas, C.S.I, Criminal Minds and more tv series along with other series like Spiderman and even Superman. I asked him what it is like writing characters that are established versus working on your own original characters. He said that it is wonderful when you get the chance to work with characters you know and love.

Jeff discussed his process for working on tie-in projects. When he is starting a new series/ project he usually asks for all of the scripts that he can get his hands on and sits down and watches everything on DVD to catch up. He then works up his own series bible with all of the characters, rules and details that are critical to make sure his work will be accurate. He has worked on both original stories that fill in gaps in tv series as well as strict adaptations. He wrote “Witch Canyon” for Supernatural which had a distinctly western flair yet was very Winchesters in tone. This was an original story that fit between seasons.

Jeff is a fan of westerns and one of his all time favorites is Zorro who he has written as well. Besides working on tie in books- Jeff has a background in comic book writing. He authored a line of western comics called “Desperadoes”- a long running western/ horror series featuring Gideon Brood – ex-Texas Ranger and stock detective. Jeff and fellow Arizona author Michael Stackpole are involved in a social networking project and they have an online chain story going on. Jeff was pleased to announce that his character in his chapter ties in to his own Desperadoes comics.
You can check out the Chain Story at http://chainstory.stormwolf.com

This social networking/ online project is critical to the new direction that publishing is heading toward. Jeff was candid in his comments that he does not think that publishing will look anything like it does today in 6 years. Editors and writers are getting cut from publishing houses and more people are having to find other ways to get their messages out there. Jeff himself has taken a desk job again as a technical editor in a corporate environment. He believes we will always have printed and bound books- but many types of writing will go to electronic mediums. As a bookstore owner he knows this is already changing how people buy things. Jeff is co-owner of the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in San Diego. Head to http://www.mystgalaxy.com/ for info on what they have going on at the store and where it is- I love visiting great bookstores when I can. So few are left. The successful ones are ones that people go to for more than just books- they go for advice, the opportunity to meet authors at signings and more.

Jeff had some advice for people who want to write and get published. It is pretty simple- but holds true. You must write often to write well. That is it.

When it comes to writing and working on a defined project there are definite challenges. Input from studios is variable. When Jeff worked on the Las Vegas books he actually wrote a book that tied into the series filling the 6 month gap after the famous cliff hanger which ended a season with the Montecito hotel blowing up. The actions of the characters from the book were then referenced during the next season – which is totally cool. Las Vegas was a victim of the writers strike and when it ended with a huge cliffhanger- that was supposed to be a mid-season cliffhanger not a series finale -fans were peeved. Jeff has been asked over and over about the possibility of a book to finish off the series in print.

The Las Vegas people were great to work with and very co-operative. Jeff’s work with movie tie-in novels has been a bit more challenging. He wrote the novelization of the film Boogeyman ( Eric Kripke’s movie) and was initially given a script which he worked with and had the book pretty well done. He submitted his work to the studio who went oops- they had not sent him the revised script. Six weeks of work had to be pretty much scrapped and redone. He did keep some of the original things from the original script which explained things better in the book which pleased the writing team. Apparently the original script was pretty decent- unlike the stripped down product that ended up on film. If this sounds familiar- you now understand where Eric Kripke’s inspiration for the Supernatural episode Hollywood Babylon came from.

If you are a Terminator fan you probably remember the news that there would be a 4 issue Terminator comics release to coincide with Terminator Salvation. Somehow only one issue was released. Why? Jeff shared that story too giving a very interesting insight behind the scenes of the Hollywood marketing machine. Jeff was contracted to write the 4 issues and was given part of the script. It was very hush hush as the studio did not want spoilers being leaked. He worked on the story layouts and had the first three issues pretty much done and a possible fourth one based upon how he thought it would end. The studio loved the first one , approved it and printed it. They liked the second one had it ready to go and then got cold feet. Over the entire project. And never finished the comics they had advertised and announced they were releasing! As we know the movie did not perform as expected at the box office and the Terminator franchise is actually up for sale. But now you know why there is only one Terminator Salvation comic and only the first chapter was ever released.

Jeff’s latest project is a departure somewhat from exploding robots and ghosts. He is working on a really cool non-fiction real crime book for CBS. It is a book about the real life cases that inspire the stories you see on Criminal Minds. Jeff got to find out more details than he wanted to about some of the creepiest criminals of our times. His book should be a good one if you are a true crime fan .

Chicago Wizard World

Laura Vandervoort to Headline Wizard World Chicago

July 19,20,21,22

Donald Stephens Convention Center ( Rosemont)
Convention center is right by Chicago’s O’Hare airport. You should be able to get a free shuttle to the convention from your hotel- check when you make your reservations if flying in. Again- try to book a hotel/ air package to get the best deal if flying in. This is a tough time for flying into Chicago- summer storms can cause havoc on flight schedules so plan to arrive early so you don’t miss anything! If driving in- there are plenty of moderately priced hotels in the area you should be able to stay at for reasonable prices. Be prepared to pay parking at the convention center.

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

By Kate Blake- Admin Multipleverses

Hot off the phone! Multipleverses got a special invite from Syfy to listen to Jewel Staite and Connor Fox talk about their rendition of the MOTHMAN story which will air as the Syfy Saturday movie of the week this Saturday night on Syfy.

In addition to talking about Mothman Jewel talked a little about her upcoming role on Warehouse 13- which she will be sharing her guest role with fellow Firefly alum Sean Maher. She says in their W13 episode he is the one pining for her as nice switch up to their Firefly roles. She also says that there is no Stargate movie being filmed right now so we are all in waiting mode on that.

Multipleverse Transcript from the live Mothman Conference Call with Jewel Staite and Connor Fox April 20, 2010

J= Jewel Staite, C= Connor Fox

Talk about the tone of the film which seems to be scarier than usual Syfy films- esp with the opening scene which features someone getting their head bashed in.
J- Film has darker tone than usual but it is fun and a bit campy
C- My nephew who is 12 loved it and my sister was shaking and had her eyes closed

Creature is supposed to be from West Virginia- what makes West Virginia so scary?
C- Deliverance has scared people for years

What is Stargate Extinction?
J- There is a script floating around but nobody is doing anything with it yet.

What is it that attracted you to this project?
J- I like fun movies and the movie was being shot in Baton Rouge which I love
C- They gave me a shotgun which is fun

Yesterday Connor talked about teasing Jewel in the alligator infested waters-
J- The last night of shooting we were shooting in the swamp and the stunt co-ordinator was next to me in a snorkel mask checking the water for alligators.

How familiar were both of you with the Richard Gere film and the original story?
J- I loved the Richard Gere movie- our movie is more silly and fun

How was it doing your own stunts?
C- It was fun and scary. Cars driving at you is scary when a car at 35 mph is coming at you- I enjoyed it.

When was the movie filmed?
J- Last August

What did you like best about this?
J- Loved being in Louisiana , really liked the crew and when I came home I found a new house that reminded me of New Orleans.
C- Working with Jewel, I enjoyed the action in the film, everyday was something new- using weapons, jumping around

Mothman seems to be shrouded in secrecy- is there a reason for it?
C- The original story has lots of scary things related to it

Psych-
J- Jewel read a great script a few months back and is hoping that it gets made and would like to work on it with her friend Gary Harvey who would be directing it. It is a really scary concept film. Jewel would be the dark Ally Sheedy type charcter.

Jewel- You are not in space- how was it doing a monster slasher film?
J- No technobabble was a nice change of pace and much easier to do, very physical with weapons training and a lot of fun

Do you think twice about looking in mirrors?
J- Yes
C- Not a problem

Questions about the older actors in the film-
J- We did a lot of laughing but there were some scenes with other cast who were really creepy ( Monica Acosta as old lady at the fair)
Enjoyed working with the cast.

Were you in stunt water?
J- We were in real swamp which was icky and nasty. There was a lot of talk of water snakes and gators.
C- They put divers- stunt co-ordinator and producer to look for gators

Do you get to ask for more money when they give you scenes like that?
J- No- we just do it
C- You imagine it will be shot in daylight- not swamp at night
J- It was not supposed to be at night originally
C- We were looking for red eyes at night

Craft services?
J- In Los Angeles the food it is health conscious, Louisiana was fried chicken and mac and cheese and really good- everything fried
C- I had to skip the fried food but never missed the deserts- banana pudding with wafers

Did they make any mothman cupcakes with red eyes?
C- They had that at the fair

What monsters would you like to fight next?
J- Any and all
C- Bigfoot
J- Abominable Snowman- but that would be in snow- I would rather go back to Louisiana

Jewel – you have been in X-Files and Firefly
J- X-Files was really cold and hard to shoot- I was in a nightgown in a river- but we would go in the jacquzzi on set ( a big budget show) when it was cold with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson- it was wild
Firefly was amazing and I met some of my best friends who are still in my life today

Who inspires you?
J- Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, great movies
C- Great performances- theater or anything that is really good
J- Chameleons like Cate Blanchett who can play anyone
C- Like Jewel Staite-
J- Please— I’ll give you 50 bucks later….

Social Networking- you are both on Twitter- how important is it for you to connect with fans as well as promoting your work?
J- I want to remain a real person to my fans and this means people can know me as a person instead of having me be some enigma
C- I need Twitter and Facebook as a younger actor get my name out there

Jewel- you will be in Warehouse 13 coming up- what do you look for?
J- I look for strong female characters and sci fi is full of them so that is where I keep working.
C- Jewel could do straight comedy- she is really funny

Movie is coming up on April24- what will draw viewers in?
J- This is not a super serious movie it is fun
C- People who have enjoyed previous Mothman stories will like this as the new chapter

What will Jewel being doing in Warehouse 13?
J- I will be acting opposite Sean Maher from Firefly- he will pining for me this time

Connor- you have another creature film coming?
C- Yakshaw- this is about kids in a camp who are working in woods and they awaken a spirit in the woods

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
J- I have been in acting since I was 5
C- I went to archeology camp as a kid- and still love treasure hunting

Connor said you improvised a scene yesterday- is that harder?
J- It is hard for me
C- I like improv to give my own take on my character but you have to make sure it fits

Is there anything they filmed that you wish they left in?
C- There is a scene where she makes fun of him and his truck and as he is driving away it stalls out which would have been great- and they cut out the scene where Casey battled the Mothman

What do you think it is about creature features and the other worldly that speaks to people in general?
J- It is about escapism. It is fun to get lost in somebody else’s world
C- As a kid you imagine a lot, as an adult this is pushed back- with these movies you get to let go and be imaginative again.

WATCH MOTHMAN Saturday April 24 on Syfy!
