January SciFi Wrap Up

Kate’s SciFi Wrap Up
by Kate Blake- editor Multipleverses

What else has been happening in science fiction and action TV this month? Our reviewer Michal has done a great job with Bones, Supernatural, Legend of the Seeker and Chuck- I will tackle some of the other shows we follow here on Multipleverses. As January comes to an end we have seen the premiere of a new show- Human Target, a new season of 24 is under way, Sanctuary ended with a bang and a huge cliffhanger, things are down and dirty in the ancient Roman Empire on Spartacus and Heroes is working toward a dramatic finish.

24 is all new this season with a new CTU and new intrigues – both political and personal. I am a couple of episodes behind thanks to idiot DVR technology- but am working on playing catch up. I like Katee Sackhoff’s character Dana and find her dual life to be interesting. FOX has gone a long time without an intriguing Dana in their lineup afterall. Annie Wersching is amazingly intense this season- you can see she is hanging by a thread. The plot against the president and his personal issues are interesting and in some ways more personal and believable than some of the previous 24 plot arcs. Catch up on HULU, FOX.com or download episodes on iTunes or Amazon ( links here on our site) if you haven’t watched so far.

Human Target is the new FOX offering. It has an old fashioned action feel with a combination of new world high tech gadgetry combined with tons of old school action and gutting it out fight scenes and drama. I am not sure how long the damsel in distress of the week will work though. This is not the 1980s. I like the team. Mark Valley as Christopher Chance is somewhat mysterious and so far his motivations are unclear. Jackie Earle Haley shines.

Sanctuary on the SyFy channel ended its second season with a BIG 2 hour finale which included many of the details that the cast spoiled us with back in July at Comic Con. The BIG BERTHA finale delivered. Smallville’s Callum Blue came in and stole every scene he was in with his charismatic and menacing presence. Loved his end shot. Am worried about Will and how our esteemed doctor will survive his ordeal. I think it is a given that the power play in the Sanctuary network will be squashed soon. I hope that Blue’s billionare madman escapes to come back later like the truly great Bond villains.

In more SyFy news- Caprica has finally premiered. Initial ratings were somewhat soft but ok considering it was up against the big Haiti telethon. We skipped tv and went to see Avatar again. The showing we went to at the Phoenix Desert Ridge AMC Imax 3-D showing was sold out with people cheering at the end. It was our third viewing and we were SHOCKED to see so many people still going to the movie- there was even a line outside the theater in the lobby with people queuing up for the next showing. I have Caprica on the DVR- will report back when I have viewed not only the pilot which was released on DVD almost a year ago but the first real new episode. Anyone else watch the trailers and think “Wow- Eric Stolz sounds like an uptight white guy”? Anyone? Really nasal and whiny. Still better than the BORING trips home on Stargate Universe.

Onto another premiere. Spartacus. Steven DeKnight who is the executive producer has had some ups and downs since leaving Smallville. He was briefly with the ill fated Hugh Jackman series “Viva Laughlin” and is now in charge of the most controversial show to come to cable in eons. Starz is thrilled – before the pilot even aired they ordered a second season of the new gladiator series. The show has a combination of familiar faces and fresh blood. And there is lots of blood. The series centers on a simple soldier – a man from Thrace. We never learn his real name but his enemies who capture him and force him into slavery and the gladiator ring call him “Spartacus.” The first episode shows us his trip from happy husband to soldier for Rome, to deserter, to captive to being forced to fight for his life in the ring. Andy Whitfield doesn’t have a lot of dialog but he does have action galore and uses his body language and facial expressions to convey emotion very effectively.

Craig Parker known around here as Darken Rahl on Legend of the Seeker is the weasely, ambitous Roman captain who first recruits Spartacus then goes against his word leaving the Thracian villages to be pillaged which is what persuades Spartacus and his men to desert their cause. Parker later captures Spartacus- ripping him out of his wife’s arms and condemning her to slavery and Spartacus to death in the ring. The episode is filled with blood and violence but if you have seen 300 and Gladiator it should not be shocking. It is more like a cartoon than realistic. There is plenty of sex and nudity. I do give Spartacus credit for bringing authenticity to thier storytelling. For the first time in a decade naked women have pubic hair. Hank Moody would applaud. Next week Spartacus moves to the training camp run by John Hannah ( The Mummy movies) and his wife played by Lucy Lawless. The political wrangling has begun and as the series moves on it will be as important as the fights in the ring. Starz has a success on its hands- they managed to pull in over a million viewers for the two nights that it aired. Remember- this is paid cable so you had to subscribe to view it. They got me to commit to $12.99 per month and so far I think I am getting my money’s worth.

From new series to series wrapping up for the year and possibly for good. Heroes is down to three episodes left and does not look good to return for a fifth season. This is too bad as the show has been stronger this year than it has since the first season. I have been enjoying the very Sylar episodes. Sylar and Matt and their showdown last night was brilliant. I like it when Matt gets mad. Claire and her dad need to figure out a way to stop Samuel and fast! Will Tracy be able to help? Will Hiro get his powers back and will he be able to find Charlie and set right what is so wrong before his brain tumor overwhelms him? Who else enjoyed the parade of dead heroes in Hiro’s coma dream from last week? Loved seeing David Anders. I really felt they got rid of him too early during the horrible Villains arc.

Dollhouse went out with a wimper. Its last episosde aired with very little fanfare. Watch online while you can- DVDs should be released by late summer/ early fall. Good news? Tahmoh Penikett is available for new work. I think he would make an awesome addition to 24- Freddie Prinze is ok but he is not tough enough. If the show is to go on without Jack- then bring in a new tough guy we can like. Being Canadian isn’t bad either as Kiefer Sutherland is also Canadian.

New this week- Smallville returns with new episodes this week and next and on Friday February 5 you will want to set your DVR for the star studded 2 hour Smallville movie event Absolute Justice with Michael Shanks guest starring as Hawkman. Do not worry if you haven’t watched in a while- you will get a previously on Smallville intro to catch you up. Watch for Shanks on an upcoming episode of Supernatural as well. I would love to see Shanks get a series where he is the primary lead- maybe the CW could cast him as the hot dad in a new show? I would definitely tune in.

New TV to Talk About – quick glimpses from Smallville, Vampire Diaries and Supernatural

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Here is the latest CW promo – the three sci-fi shows all get a little screen time- the most exciting is the shirt rip with Clark revealing the S under his dress shirt and the Dean Winchester wink. Is it me or does Katie Cassidy seem to be channeling Ruby for her job on Melrose? I am still hoping she can come back to something less soap and more gore and other worldly ….loved her in Harper’s Island.

Multipleverses Spotlight Show of the week: Smallville

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By Kate Blake- Admin Multipleverses

If you are a Superman fan and you have never seen Smallville- this is a great time to jump into the series. After 8 long years of the trials and teen angst of young Clark Kent- this season the show is finally growing up. Clark Kent has taken on an alter ego identity, he is working a the Daily Planet as a cub reporter, and he is madly in love with Lois Lane. Oh yeah- and Major Zod is on Earth thanks to a weird time capsule and he is as always out to take over and make Earth his own. If you used to watch the show- you need to catch up! Over on OSCK our sister site we have episode recaps and reviews for all of seasons 7,8 and 9. You can buy the first 8 seasons on DVD and you can download the current season from iTunes and Amazon- we have links here on our site even. We have been chatting up the show like mad in our forums- SUPERVERSES- and the spoilers for this winter are amazing. Michael Shanks and Pam Grier will be featured in a full length 2 hour Smallville movie event coming in February to the CW. Shanks will be playing Hawkman- and the word is that it will be AMAZING!

This week is the fall finale- the episode Pandora will delve into the future that Lois was sucked into at the end of Season 8 – where she spent 3 weeks that up until now she has not remembered. The CW will be repeating the first 9 episodes of the season starting in December so if you missed anything- you can catch up during the winter hiatus.

Here is the trailer and two spoiler clips from Friday’s all new episode of Smallville. Did I mention that Clark and Lois are in love and we get some seriously sexy nookie coming our way?

Multipleverses Fall 2009 SciFi TV Viewing Guide

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

By Kate Blake- Editor and Admin

Last week marked the official beginning of the new fall TV season which included some returning favorites and some new faces 05ccb136403a441d67cd77eaee2852f5to the sci-fi and action tv landscape. Here are some of the highlights to date- SPOILER warnings if you haven’t seen the shows mentioned.

Monday Night

Heroes: If you haven’t watched Heroes in a while- you need to add it back to your viewing schedule! This season has started out strong with newcharacters and old ones who are being tied together in a new story arc. Claire is at college dealing with being herself and no longer running. Noah is redefining himself and his role in the Heroes world. He has already helped Tracy reclaim her life. We have Petrelli drama on all fronts with SUPER Peter and Nathan/Sylar. The new story arc with Robert Knepper from Prison Break is intriguing and the powers he and his carnival family wield include some all new ones that are fresh not only to Heroes but TV. I love Samuel’s earth moving powers, the Tattoo lady is still a bit of a mystery, and this week we saw a deaf woman who is seeing sound as colors. Meanwhile Matt Parkman is having a very tough time dealing with Sylar who has taken up residence in his head. Hiro is dying and trying to franchise his heroics and Ando is getting busy with Hiro’s sister. We aren’t quite sure where Mohinder is- he is supposed to return later this season hopefully right in time to save Hiro’s life.

Wednesday

PosterGhost Hunters and Destination Truth share the SyFy channel Wednesday night block and both shows have been having a great fall with interesting stories and some fun. Watch for the annual Ghost Hunters live all night event on Halloween. I am betting Josh Gates will be on board for the overnight investigation.

Eastwick ABC premiered their new witchy series on Wednesday night and I was pleased that the producers made some edits to the original pilot. The pilot that aired did a nice job of introducing our three main characters and showing glimpses of the dormant powers within that are stirred when they all pitch coins in a fountain at a town celebration. Paul Gross as Darryl Van Horne has the Jack Nicholson sleaze factor down in spades. This week he began the seduction of the women – and the da4834_112115272322_9991232322_2823966_5586849_nnce continues this week. I like all three female leads with Lindsey Price and her quirky newspaper reporter who suffers from inappropriate verbal incontinence in the presence of the guy she lusts after making me chuckle. Sarah Rue is her BFF who is feeling pushed aside by her friend’s new witchy friends. Rating? Chick flick with a paranormal twist- I will keep watching to see how it develops.

Thursday

Supernatural: We have talked about the boys here repeatedly and the show just keeps getting better. The ratings have been soft but many of the show’s male viewers have been watching this little thing called football which also airs on Thursday nights…..Just make sure you have it on your DVR list so if it is pre-empted for sports in your market you will catch the showing whenever your local affiliate airs it.

38405_BonesPromosS5_CC_973_122_937loBones: Week 2 of season 5 had the show back on track with not one but two gross bodies, the team at the Jeffersonian pulling together to make sure that their favorite intern Wendell kept his scholarship , Booth and Bones had some bickering about money and plumbing and ended up with their heads under a sink. The show is back on track and into the groove as Booth is regaining his own personality again after his brain surgery.FLASHFORWARD_Y1_AdArt_Vert_NoABC

Flash Forward: If you missed the premiere you really missed one of the most exciting , intriguing and captivating series premieres that I can remember. Great cast, interesting mystery at the heart of the show, and a very non-sappy set of storylines. Joe Fiennes is a formidable leading man and commands every scene he is in. John Cho is charming and adorable and you really want him to be ok. Sonya Walger is right on point at the loving wife and caring surgeon who is wrecked emotionally by her glimpse of the future. The actor I am looking forward to seeing more of is Jack Davenport whose character is introduced in the last minutes of the pilot. DominPosteric Monaghan joins the story this week so make sure you catch the pilot and then tune in on Thursday!

The Mentalist: Last season ended with Patrick Jane and the CBI team taking out Red John’s accomplice and latest protege. The series premiered on Thursday in its new time slot on CBS with the team being pulled from the Red John case and Jane getting pissy about it. He and Lisbon go back and forth as they try to solve the case of the week with Jane being his usual sneaky self and getting the job done and finally ending the episode admitting he really has nothing else and it is only a matter of time before they will get the case back. Savior009

Friday

Smallville: Hey guess what? Smallville moved to Friday night last week with a strong premiere episode with Brian Austin Green guest starring in part 1 of a two episode arc that he is in. Guess what? Post- Doomsday Clark is back in black in full hero mode, Zod is on earth ( and very hot!) and Lois Lane is now the leading lady front and center. Joining the series this year as a semi-regular is Alessandro Juliani ( Gaeta on BSG) as Dr Emil Hamilton who is taking on superhero support duties along with Chloe . Make sure you have Smallville on your DVR – this season is going to be good!

dollhousoeLogo_011209Dollhouse: Did you watch the season premiere? Yeah- me neither and the ratings reflected it. Dollhouse got about the same number of viewers that Smallville did and FOX cannot keep a show on with ratings at CW levels. The Dollhouse deathwatch has begun- the question is how many of their second season episodes will actually air. I have it sitting on my DVD recorder on disk- I probably won’t get around to watching these until next month.

Medium: The DuBois family made their move to CBS seamlessly and didn’t lose any of their viewers helping elevate their lead in Ghost NUP_133278_0128Whisperer for a strong CBS Friday night. If you were worried- Allison has managed to survive the coma she went into after the delayed brain surgery she had in the season 5 finale on NBC. The first episode was a bit subdued with Allison using a cane and not yet fully physically recovered- she is even called “House” in deference to her using a cane. Over the episode her gifts and physical well being return. Next week promises to be exciting as the family is back with mom yelling and poor Ariel seemingly possessed by an unwelcome spirit. I am hoping we will see more with the kids this year as Marie is now in school and verbal and Bridget cracks me up every week.

COMING this week:

Stargate Universe premieres on SyFy on Friday so be sure to set your DVR! You will not want to miss this!

Coming NEXT Week:

Sanctuary : Last season ended with a horrible cliff hanger that had everything in turmoil. The new season promises to be exciting as the show picks up right where it left off last year.

Single Emmy Nominations list for Sci-Fi and Action Series

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

More single Emmy nominations from some of our favorite series- Chuck is up against Burn Notice in the stunts category, the special effects area is tight. I think BSG might get it but am thrilled to see Sanctuary get a nod for its all green screen filming and 100% digital environment. Smallville and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles have two of their best episodes of the seasons facing off in the sound editing category. Life on Mars may not have been renewed but it snagged a most coveted Best Cinematography nomination. Bones gets a nomination for Art Direction for Hero in the Hold- the episode with Booth trapped on the ship and hallucinating. The fun final nod on this list is the nomination of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along for best web series- especially sweet when Dollhouse was shut out completely. In some non- sci-fi nominations, Nate Fillion’s Castle received a nod for best score and William Shatner received a best supporting actor in a drama nomination for his work on Boston Public.

Supernatural and Vampire Diaries premiere date announced

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Variety reports that the upcoming new series The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural will be premiering on Sept. 10 with the teen vamp show premiering in the hour currently housing Smallville. Smallville will premiere on Sept 25 with the two Fridays before it housing repeats of the network’s new dramas until the Smallville premiere. Shiri Appleby’s new disfunctional family drama will join the schedule mid-year after Smallville.

We have some video spoilers for the new Vampire Diaries. I am a little disturbed and worried about how I will be able to abbreviate the show- Supernatural is usually designated by SN or SPN- but calling a teenage drama of any sort VD is just unseemly. Anyone have some good suggestions for this dilemma?
