TVD – “Unpleasantville”
Review & Highlights
By Michal – Staff Writer

TVD - Unpleasantville

“What is this like a threesome now? You and the Salvatore brothers…” – Caroline

I totally need to figure out the tracklist for tonight’s episode and buy all the tracks on iTunes. I grew up listening to the music of the 50s and 60s and tonight’s newer versions of some of the classic hits were amazing. But onto tonight’s festivities…if you haven’t watched the episode yet, the standard spoiler warning applies and you should stop reading now.

Review

I’ve come to a very important decision.  There is nothing better than a retro dance to bring out the drama and plot twists.  I kind of wish my high school had thrown one.  They seem like tons of fun and full of excitement and I kind of feel like I’m missing out on one of the great teenage experiences.

And for the twist I didn’t see coming: Elena’s biological mother was named Isabel and just happened to be married to Alaric before Damon murdered her.  Well played, Vampire Diaries.  Well played.  I’m definitely intrigued where the writers are going with this.

I also liked the brother interaction during this episode.  Despite all their issues, Damon really does care for Stephan and I think he might trust him.  We’ll see if that turns our well.  I do have to say that Salvatore brothers weren’t the only pretty boys Katharine turned!  That chick got around!

Overall, I thought this was an awesome episode and full of promise.  Elena fought back against an attacking vampire.  Stephan tortured and killed a vampire and I have to say it was kind of hot.  Plus I can’t wait to see what Anna and Ben are up to.  I guess there is only one thing to ask after an episode like this: how many other vampires are there in this town?  I can’t wait for next week!

Miscellaneous Highlights & Thoughts

Stephan the jeweler…I totally see a QVC infomercial in his future.

“You just found out your boyfriend is a vampire.  So unless your birth parents are aliens, how bad could it be?”

I have to say the whole pizza delivery scheme to get into the house was pretty brilliant.  I don’t know why more vamps haven’t thought of it before.

I wish I cared a bit more about Matt and Caroline’s burgeoning relationship.  When it first started I was interested to see how well they connected and intrigued at how they would be as a couple.  Unfortunately, they are kind of a boring – and clichéd – couple.

“I’m really sorry it won’t be of help with your diabolical plan…the sequel.”

This will come as no surprise: I still don’t like Auntie Jenna.  Other than providing backstory and prompting Alaric to talk, she doesn’t have a whole lot to do.

I like the addition of Sean Faris as Ben.  I feel bad for Bonnie, but I like the character possibility and what exactly he’s up to.

I was so excited for Bonnie until the reveal that Ben is a vampire.  Poor girl can’t catch a break!

“You mean we did all this dancing for nothing?”

Brothers working together for the win!  Perhaps the Salvatores could team up with the Winchesters in a Thursday night crossover.

After watching a vampire die tonight, I miss a good dusting.  The death of vampires is not a pretty thing.  Joss Whedon had the right idea!

“He’s been invited in.”  One of the shortest, but most valid reasons I’ve heard for killing a vampire.

So what did you all think? Do you agree with me? Were we watching the same show? Leave your comments below!
