Some of the nominees’ reactions include:

6292_7011668111“Without all of the fans, the claws would have been sheathed a long time ago!  Thank you so much,” said Hugh Jackman after hearing he was nominated for two “SCREAM” awards and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was nominated for 13.

“Everyone knows it’s the VILLAINS who have the most fun.  Thanks to the ‘SCREAM’ team and congrats to everyone at ‘True Blood.’  This is very exciting for the whole show,” said Best Villain nominee and star of  HBO’s “True Blood” Alexander Skarsgard.

“Thank you for the nomination and thank you for letting me frighten you.  I look forward to doing it again sometime soon,” said Ryan Kwanten trueblood09_22after hearing he was nominated for Best Horror Actor for his role as Jason Stackhouse on “True Blood.”

“Getting nominated for kissing a Vulcan is a better fate than logic,” said “Star Trek’s” Zoe Saldana after getting word she received two “SCREAM” Awards nominations for Best Breakout Performance: Female and Best Science Fiction Actress.

J.J. Abrams’ Sci-Fi action-adventure “Star Trek” tops the list with 17 nominations including The Ultimate Scream, Best Science Fiction Movie, Best Director, Best Ensemble, Holy Sh*t Scene of the Year and a nod in the all-new Fight-to-the-Death Scene of the Year category.  Comic book-inspired blockbusters “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Watchmen” each nabbed 13 nominations, while HBO’s vampire-themed television series “True Blood” garnered nine nominations.  A full list of categories and nominations are included below.

Ballots were sent out to Spike TV’s “SCREAM 2009” advisory board, consisting of some of the most respected and well-known members of the horror, sci-fi, fantasy and comic book worlds who were responsible for advising on categories and determining nominees in each category.  All films, television shows and comic books were deemed eligible for inclusion if they were released between August 9, 2008 and July 15, 2009 and were representative of the genres listed.  Winners will be determined by online voting at scream.spike.com.

A review of Star Trek
By Michal

Star Trek - Cast

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life-forms and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before.” – Spock Prime

I love Star Trek in its many, many incarnations. I’ve watched all the series except Enterprise, which I haven’t completed for various reasons. I’ve made it through all of the previous movies including the not-so-great ones. I’ve gone to conventions. I’m not sure I would characterize myself as a trekker or trekkie since I don’t speak Klingon, possess blueprints for the Enterprise, or get extremely worked up about inaccuracies, but the more I think about it…I think maybe I am.
Anyway, I went into the new Star Trek movie expecting to enjoy myself. However, I walked out with my mind blown and in a full fangirl squee! I’ve gone back 2 more times and I figure see it at least one more time in the theater. Since the movie has been out a couple of weeks, I thought I’d share a few things the movie did that made me a very happy camper!   If by some amazing feat you haven’t seen the movie, you might want to stop reading now!

Oh, what a cast!
J.J. Abrams has a talent for creating large casts of unknowns that work beautifully (Alias, Lost) and he’s done it again. Going into the movie, the casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty and Zoe Saldana as Uhura were the only ones I really liked. I had seen Chris Pine (Kirk) in The Princess Diaries 2 and while it’s an amusing movie, it didn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence. All I knew about Zachary Quinto is his character on Star Trek - McCoyHeroes likes brains. I associated John Cho with Harold &Kumar slacker movies and let’s face it, Karl Urban is Eomer! It’s that simple. Sure he wore a silly hat in Chronicles of Riddick and tried to kill Jason Bourne, but at the end of the day, he’s Eomer to me…well at least until now!
All of the actors did a decent job of portraying the characters without making the performances seem like merely a good imitation of the original. I enjoyed watching a young, cocky Kirk testing his limits. I was impressed by the underlying emotion Spock seemed to contain just under the surface for much of the movie and how he handled his dual heritage.  Plus who knew “Live long and proser” could be used as an insult?!?!  While I am still not sure about Spock/Uhura relationship, it did add an interesting element to the series. Sulu got to be a badass. Chekov was endearing and Scotty was comic gold. But I have to say, I found Urban as Leonard “Bones” McCoy beyond fantastic. From the moment he appears on screen he IS McCoy and there is no room for doubt. His friendship with Kirk is spot on and I loved watching him interact with Spock. (“Green-blooded hobgoblin…“) All in all, perfection!

Fight the Future!
As Spock Prime was explaining to Kirk how Nero’s appearance had changed the timeline, I thought to myself, “Well played, Mr. Abrams!” The device of creating alternate realities is often used badly, but in this case it frees the new movies from the very detailed Trek timeline and I think more interestingly re-envisions Star Trek - Spock & Kirkthe Kirk/Spock relationship. I’m a big fan of onscreen hetero-partnerships (Jay & Silent Bob, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost, Ryan Atwood & Seth Cohen, Alan & Denny…you get the idea), but often you don’t get to see how that relationship developed. I loved the fact that Kirk and Spock started out in this movie as adversaries and while by the end they respect each other, it’s by no means the deep friendship as seen in the earlier series. It’s a brilliant move and I can’t wait to see the partnership develop.

Beyond Kirk & Spock…
I remember reading an interview with Nichelle Nicols, the original Uhura, where she talked about meeting Martin Luther King Jr. at a civil rights protest. At the time, she was thinking of quitting Star Trek halfway through the first season because her character was given so little to do. However, King urged her not to quit, saying that her mere presence on the bridge of the Enterprise showed all people as equal. That made Star Trek - Uhuraher not only a role model to black children, but also served as a visual re-enforcement of equality for many adults. The later films did give the supporting crew members a bit more to do, but I think this movie showcased them nicely and used their talents more effectively.
In this film, Uhura is not only beautiful and smart, but she holds her own against both Kirk and Spock. While I’m still not completely sure about the Spock romance, it does add an interesting and different dynamic to the character that I think will pay off in the end . By making Chekov a young prodigy, but still innocent, the character has room to grow in the following films. He is still the most under-developed of the main crew, but I think given time, a more rounded character will emerge. I appreciated that Sulu was able to show off not only his piloting skills, after a small misstep, but also his fencing expertise and even saved Kirk. Scotty was not only an engineering genius, but also a great comedic presence on the bridge and the transporter pad. I’m looking forward to watching the whole crew, not only Kirk and Spock, develop in the coming sequels!

Make ‘em laugh!
While Star Trek episodes can be funny, I don’t remember laughing this hard at any of the previous films or from such a variety of sources. McCoy repeatedly jabbing Kirk with vaccines and other medications while Star Trek - Scottychasing him around the Enterprise was hilarious. (“You’ve got numb tongue? I can fix that!”) As expected Simon Pegg was delightful. Scotty was hilarious in practically every scene he appears. How the man cracked me up merely asking for a towel or even a sandwich is beyond me, but I know I wasn’t alone in my laughter. I had a couple of different theater audiences that can back me up on that one. I also found the Kirk and Spock Prime interactions often funny, which I wasn’t expecting at all. I think most importantly, I felt the comedic elements didn’t hamper the telling of the story at all and I hope they can keep this fun trend in the subsequent films.

Keep it familiar!
I didn’t pay attention to much of the press before the movie came out, so the extended presence of Leonard Nimoy came as a pleasant surprise. He has a comforting presence and I’m guessing his appearance Star Trek - Enterprisein the film really helped some of the hardcore fans accept the new direction of the series. In addition to Nimoy, I also loved Majel Barrett-Roddenberry as the voice of the computer. I know she completed her voice-over work on this film just over a week before passing away. I’m glad she lived long enough to see the resurgence of Star Trek.
In addition to the familiar faces and voices, I also enjoyed all of the little in-jokes and references sprinkled throughout the film. I smiled when Bones uttered his first “damn it” and Spock uttered “Fascinating.” I chuckled at Scotty’s, “I’m giving her all she’s got, Captain!” I grinned at hearing someone call for Nurse Chapel and the reference to Admiral Archer’s beagle. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point!

Leave them wanting more…
In the end, I think what the movie did best was left me wanting more. I’ve talked to a number of friends, not all Trek fans, and each one of them has said the same thing: they didn’t want it to end. I couldn’t agree more and I think that is a key to the survival of this franchise. I’m with Scotty…”I like this ship! It’s exciting!”

Winona Ryder at the Costume Institute Gala in NYC

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Winona Ryder is doing her part to promote the new Star Trek movie- she was on the red carpet tonight in New York at the Costume Institute Fashion Gala. This annual event always has a theme and this year it is the “Model as Muse” so wild fashions on the red carpet abound as high fashion is glorified. Winona takes a simple streamlined approach in a black mini with tights. I am loving her hair- short as always and really good looking.
