Thank you for your insightful analysis of the CW promotional debaucle. I also attended Supernatural Comic Con session and was surprised at the large number of older (and male) fans. While I understand that the CW wants to land the younger female demographic (which I personally find amusing because at that age, I had school loans, not mad money), as you said, there are untapped opportunities to capture other demographic groups.

But then again, maybe we shouldn't expect much (or actually, anything) when Dawn O. is in charge of programming. Her track record at UPN was lackluster at best. Yet, instead of being understandably fired, Dawn was put in charge of programming at the new CW network. And rather than learning from her UPN years, she still wears the same blinders, continues to beat the same tired drum, ignores what the viewers say they want in favor of what Dawn herself personally likes. Is it any surprise that this approach doesn't work? It's fairly mind boggling that networks are now canceling new programs after 2 episodes but Dawn still has her job. The workings of Hollywood are mysterious indeed.

Dawn Ostroff doesn't get why Jensen can't be her boy toy and that is why she is not promoting our show.

Very thought-provoking article. It's too bad that the CW does not have the financial means to promote ALL their shows and IMO, this really is a double-edged sword for this fledgling network. And as you've stated, they realize that Supernatural and Smallville already have well establshed, rabid fanbases that are driven to do this work for them. They also realize that they do not have another show that would be able to withstand the Timeslot of Death better than Supernatural. To their credit, however, they did invest a pretty sum in the production and Comic Con distribution of those gorgeous Supernatural posters and the double-sided gigantuan bags.

I, for one, hope for the network's sake that "90210" and their other (inane, teenybopper shows) succeed because I really, REALLY need for the network to remain viable for two more years, through the conclusion of Supernatural.

Thank you so much, Erika, for this post. You gotta wonder if some of the powers that be are deliberately trying to sabotage the Smallville/Supernatural lineup on the CW.
It doesn't make a whole lick of sense to black-out promotions of the two most popular series on the network to....what? Let people know there's a whole line-up of new rich-girls shows on the schedule and keep airing THOSE promos ad nauseum?
I know that seeing those commercials while watching 'Supernatural' last night made me want to throw up.

Hey, I'm no conspiracy theorist here (well, maybe a little) but, c'mon! What on earth is wrong with this picture.
