Amy Smart, who co-stars with Kiefer Sutherland in Mirrors, told SCI FI Wire that she believes the supernatural horror tale is more than just a good genre piece.
Sutherland stars as Ben Carson, an alcoholic ex-cop who’s working as a security guard at a burned-out New York department store, where he begins to see strange, disturbing images in the mirrors. Soon, Carson’s family–including his estranged wife (Paula Patton), two young kids and sister (Smart)–start seeing terrifying images at home, too, as an evil force comes ever closer.
“This movie is very creepy,” Smart said in an interview. “A good film is very hard to make, whatever kind of film it is, because it has to go beyond whatever genre it is to make it a great film, period. It’s about telling a great story that’s intriguing, that builds, that builds the characters, that’s multidimensional and is going somewhere interesting. And, I think, also, for horror films, there are only so many scary horror films you can make.”
Smart praised the concept behind Mirrors, which is directed by French helmer Alexandre Aja (High Tension). “It’s sort of like the classic Poltergeist, where you’re like, ‘Huh? What’s in the TV?’” she said. “Growing up, to me, Poltergeist was terrifying. The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist were terrifying. Those were the three that I was scared by as a kid.” Mirrors opens on Aug. 15
