Amy Smart told SCI FI Wire that she’s completed work on the pilot for The Meant to Be’s, a proposed CBS
fantasy series from Medium creator Glenn Gordon Caron, in which she plays an angel who returns to Earth.
“This would potentially be a midseason replacement,” Smart said in an interview while promoting her current project, the supernatural horror film Mirrors. “We shot it in June, and we find out, I think, in mid-August. Glenn Gordon Caron, I knew he was so talented from all of this projects he’s made, but working with him, I was more and more in awe of him as the days progressed, which is usually not what happens. He was just so wonderful to work with that I hope it will become a series.”
On the show, Smart (The Butterfly Effect) plays an affluent, somewhat uptight New York art-gallery owner. The character ends up being blackmailed and, eventually, thrown over the balcony of her high-rise apartment to her death on her wedding night.
“She wakes up in this in-between world that’s not heaven or hell,” Smart said. “It’s sort of this next place you go. It’s sort of this master-control realm. They’re giving her an orientation, and she meets this person, who Ioan Gruffudd plays, and she’s basically told that she’s dead and has this new job now [helping people on Earth straighten out their lives]. She’d led a very frivolous life, and she’s not the kindest of people, so when she dies, she realizes there is something to be said about being a good person.”
Smart was quick to add that she understands it if people hear the premise of The Meant to Be’s and immediately think of another old series.
“I am an angel who comes back to Earth, but it’s not Touched By an Angel by any means,” Smart said. “When I was talking to Glenn about this, he said it was a romance, that it was Heaven Can Waits meets Brazil.”
