Cast of Battlestar Galactica at Comic Con
BSG Panel Review by Kate Blake
One of the biggest highlights of the weekend for me at my first Comic Con was the BSG panel. I waited in line for an hour and a half to get in and it did not disappoint. The cast was well represented by Cylons and Colonials alike along with the creators of the show in this the last Comic Con appearance for BSG as it enters its last season.
Ron Moore, David Eick , James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhoff, Michael Trucco, Jamie Bamber and later Tahmoh Penikett were all on stage to thrill fans with tales from the set of the series. The moderator was BSG superfan Kevin Smith. Kevin kept the discussion rolling and the panel animated throughout. Most of the presentations and panels at Comic Con run about 45 minutes- the BSG session was a full hour. It started with an awesome compilation video that included fresh spoiler footage for the end of season 4 and ended with a preview for the new BSG pre-quel Caprica. If the 4000 plus fans in the ballroom at the San Diego convention center were any indication the SciFi Network will have no trouble launching Caprica as a series when BSG is done.
I recorded the panel with my camcorder and the video came out pretty nice- I have it loaded in our video channel and on VEOH. You can download it from VEOH for your PC or iPod. The SCIFI Channel has posted the panel on their website as well with an 18+ language warning for Kevin Smith having a potty mouth. This seemed to be a problem amongst producers at Comic Con but hey- we all get excited sometimes!

One of my favorite BSG moments from the convention was taking the trolley back to my hotel the next day on Sunday. A young junior high aged boy and his mom were also heading out leaving the convention and when he heard I had been to the BSG panel the day before his eyes lit up - he asked if I had seen Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer? I told him that they were both there and looking gorgeous and that Katee was really funny making fun of Tahmoh Penikett and calling him a girl….He sighed dramatically, wishing he could have seen them. He and mom had met Tom Zarek- Richard Hatch- and he was very disturbed by the fact that Zarek was flirting with his mom. Mom - she was not so disturbed by this! Richard had been prominently featured in the upstairs signing area throughout the convention so fans had easy access to him for autographs. Hatch had been key in the BSG 30th Anniversary panel earlier in the convention- I missed that but heard it was great fun too.
I told my fellow travelers the panel would be online on the SCIFI website soon and that his mom would have to decide if he could listen to the swearing that took place. Mom said she would preview it when it was up and then decide if he could watch. He was a little bummed at his viewing being censored but she told him it would probably be ok as she is never that concerned about language- more about content.
FRAK yeah! As a junior high aged girl in the late 70s I fell in love with science fiction thanks to Star Wars and then BSG. I was obsessed with another Starbuck way back then and went on to watch Dirk Benedict every week on The A-Team thanks to that early crush. I have a feeling Katee will do quite well in her next series thanks to a similar following. Tricia is already bringing new viewers to Burn Notice and Tahmoh got a rousing welcome from Whedon fans at the Dollhouse panel. Watching the finale of BSG will be one of the toughest goodbyes we will experience as fans. I feel privileged that I was able to see the cast while they are all still together and I thank Ron Moore and David Eick for some of the best entertainment I have ever experienced.
