SDCC 08: Wolverine Unleashes Gambit
Jackman presents a first look at the X-Men spin-off.
July 24, 2008 - 20th Century Fox offered a special treat today for fans attending the studio’s movies presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con with a first look at next year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, complete with an appearance by Logan himself, star Hugh Jackman.
The Gavin Hood-directed spin-off recounts Wolverine’s exploits before he joined the X-Men. The prequel stars Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed (a.k.a. Sabretooth), Danny Huston as William Stryker, Dominic Monaghan as Beak, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Taylor Kitsch as Gambit, and Will.i.am as Wraith.
Jackman surprised the crowd with his “unscheduled” appearance, telling the fans that the movie had literally just wrapped filming and thanking them for all the success he’s had thanks to Wolverine. He then came down off the stage to meet Wolverine creator Len Wein and shake his hand.
Jackman then presented “bad ass” exclusive full of “beserker rage” footage from the movie, which he also produced. And we can confirm that it was indeed bad ass.
The trailer-like sequence opens with Logan and Creed in a military prison cell where they survived execution by firing squad for decapitating a senior officer. They are met by Colonel William Stryker, who offers them a chance to serve their country by taking part in the Weapon X program. We then saw glimpses of the team’s different members: Blob, Deadpool. Wraith and, in perhaps the biggest mass geekgasm Hall H has ever heard, Gambit. READ THE REST ON IGN.com

Wolverine Surprises Comic-Con
Hugh Jackman, star of the upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, made a suprise appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 24, bringing with him the first footage from the highly anticipated prequel movie in an unscheduled panel.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Jackson told a cheering crowd of more than 6,500 in the San Diego convention center. “That man is way too tall to play Wolverine.”
Jackman added: “Without you guys I wouldn’t have a career. Without you guys there wouldn’t be X-Men 1, 2 and 3. There wouldn’t be Wolverine. Without you guys there might not be this current phase of comic-book movies. So I have to say thank you to all of you.”
The footage opened on a dank prison cell with two men inside. One is Logan, the other is Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber). The next scene shows them being brought into a courtyard and tied to posts to face a firing squad.
A voice asks, “How did that go?”
Wolverine’s answer: “It tickled.”
Next, Wolverine is standing on a path in a clearing, with a helicopter behind him. Another helicopter flies away, following a river.
The footage shows Maj. William Stryker (Danny Huston) talking to both Logan and Creed. “I’m putting together a special team with special privileges,” he says. “How would you like to serve your country?”
Creed says, “We didn’t sign up for this.”
Wolverine rises out of a tank, showing his blades, then fights men around him in the laboratory.
A succession of quick cuts shows Wolverine fighting another person as they both jump through a window, then Wolverine and a dying woman on a beach, then a chase scene in which Wolverine races a motorcycle away from a low-flying helicopter. He drags claws on the ground and spins the motorcycle around, causing a jeep that is chasing him to overturn.
Fox’s presentation of the Wolverine footage was a closely held secret, though rumors had circulated for weeks. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is slated to open in May 2009. SOURCE: SCIFI WIRE
Comic-Con: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Surprise
In the first twist of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, an unscheduled Hugh Jackman bonded with fans and showcased footage from next summer’s prequel, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
“Without you guys, I wouldn’t have a career,” Jackman told an energized crowd, who had gathered to see Keanu Reeves promote The Day the Earth Stood Still and Mark Wahlberg talk about Max Payne.
The party-crashing Jackman, muttonchops-free and just off a plane from Australia, offered a shout-out to Wolverine creator Len Wein and waded into the audience to shake hands with the comics vet.
Sneak-peek footage from the flick, due May 2009, had a few surprises as well:
Most notable were the glimpses at Wolverine’s mutant costars, including Gambit (Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch), Kestrel (will.i.am) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). “You’re going to see a lot of beserker rage,” Jackman promised the jacked-up crowd, obviously hungry to see more of Wolverine’s hard-to-cage anger.
The clip’s money shot, according to fan reaction: Wolverine facing off against archrival Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), and declaring, “I’m going to cut your goddamned head off. See if that works.”
