The Incredible Hulk Trailer Review by Kate Blake
When I first heard that yet another Incredible Hulk movie was being optioned I was skeptical. I hated the stupid bouncing boinging Hulk in the Eric Bana movie. As a scientist by training I had major issues with the science in the movie and felt Bana- who everyone loves to go on and on about how brilliant he is -was flat and boring.
This was of great disappointment to me as I loved the classic The Incredible Hulk TV series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. Bill Bixby’s
Dr. David Banner was serious and had to work to keep his emotions in check. He was a good guy and maintained that when he got mad and turned into the great green one. Maybe it is the color green I liked so well….Oscar the Grouch was one of my favorite muppets and I loved Kermit. Ferrigno’s Hulk maintained a humanity inside the monster which is what made the two sides of Banner so sympathetic. The fact that Ferrigno was a mass of rippling muscle seldom seen in the swinging 70s and half naked every week was very appealing to my pre-adolescent musings over the opposite sex as well.
I watched the trailer for the new movie with very low expectations. This film had not really been on my radar even though I had bought a special edition Red Hulk #1 comic at the Phoenix Comic Con this winter and had it signed by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness at the convention. Both men were charming by the way- Jeph has so much energy and personality and love the comics genre so much it is really amazing.
Back to the movie though. Ed Norton comes on the screen in the trailer and automatically I was captivated. He has a humanity in him that really takes me back to what I remember most about The Hulk and why I loved the show so much as a child. He is one of the most intelligent actors working today and seems to actually get Liv Tyler to put in an animated performance - something she sometimes struggles with.
The HULK looks sufficiently green to suit me and not as cartoonish as the one in the Bana film. The effects look great- in HD they appear very realistic and the trailer is seamless between the CG characters and the inserted background and the live action that goes with them. The adversary this time around is another scary human turned monster called The Abomination and he is truly frightening -again without being cartoonish. The monsters, that are wreaking havoc and chaos and inspiring terror, remind me some of the giant dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, larger than life and frightening yet compelling. Whenever a film can catch you with the trailer- you know the marketing department has done their job.
I will be looking forward to shelling out my hard earned dollars to buy this one on High Def DVD as soon as the Blu-Ray is released. I just got the two Fabulous Four movies on Blu-Ray and they are awesome in HD!
The Incredible Hulk opens in the US on June 13, 2008
