Exclusive: LUCY LAWLESS GIVES THE SCOOP ON THE END OF ‘BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’
You could almost call it keeping up with the Joneses, but instead it’s keeping up with Lucy Lawless. Over the last few years, iF likes to check in with the talented actress once known as XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS to see what she’s up to in the realms of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, her music, and any other projects she has going on. Last week was one of those occurrences when iF MAGAZINE caught up with the Goddess herself and got the skinny on her latest adventures.
iF MAGAZINE: So when we last spoke, you were up in Canada filming BATTLESTAR GALACTICA season 4. Did you have to return to finish shooting once the writer’s strike was over?
LUCY LAWLESS: No we got everything we needed done then. Because it was such an uncertain time, I think Ron [Moore] was very mindful of trying to tie up as many loose ends just in case the strike went on in perpetuity. So he wanted to make sure that if it was a forced end, that it would be a satisfying resolution to things. Which was hard for him, and it’s not the ideal way to go out when your show is your baby.
iF: Had you heard anything lately about whether or not SCI FI Channel was going to split this last season over two years like they discussed?
LAWLESS: You know, I never even thought to ask anyone that. No I don’t know. I think that would be a horrible idea if they did split it.
iF: I agree. I think it might kill fan interest in the show if they do. But, onto other topics, you just voiced Wonder Woman in the new animated DVD JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER .
LAWLESS: Right, oh God, I’d almost forgotten about that I did it so long ago.
iF: Any talk of doing a sequel, because it seems to be getting a really positive response from fans.
LAWLESS: Has it? That’s awesome! I didn’t know that. I’m so pleased, because with comics you have so many people that respect the original and have ideas of what the characters sound like, that you can crush people’s preconceptions if you do it wrong. You can’t hope to please everyone all of the time, but you can hope to please most of them, so I’m so pleased that the response has been good.
iF: What about your music?
LAWLESS: Leading up to a show you get really hyped up and then when you do the show — it’s such a huge release of adrenaline and you can’t ever imagine doing anything else. Then afterwards you think “oh my God that was so hard!” and you really can’t think of doing it again. Two months after a show, it’s scary to have another one because I don’t do them often enough. I ride a real wave of confidence and positivity then into dread in the trough. We have a show in May in London and I have to get my ass in gear for that. This is totally different and has a real rock set to it. I wish I could take my musicians from here and re-tool the show and make it stronger at heart, but I can’t because you just can’t afford to travel that many people and put them up in London. So I’ve had to hire new musicians and it’s incredibly expensive. The new musicians that I’ve got are more rock orientated, but you have to go with your strengths at the moment.
iF: What’s up next for you?
LAWLESS: The next four months I’m working on a movie called BEDTIME STORIES for Disney. It’s an Adam Sandler movie — very fabulous and fun. I love Adam Sandler and I love Guy Pearce who plays my boyfriend. Keri Russell is the love interest and Courteney Cox plays Adam’s sister.
